Do you have enough money?

Do you have enough money?

Everyday life in the North-East requires attitude, perseverance and tenacity.
The winter is long and dark, and the snowfall is sometimes infernal.
You have to go out into the open if you want to keep your face in the eyes of the villagers.
You accumulate skiing kilometres by the skin of your teeth, because what else can you do in the coffee room at work?
The minimum equipment for winter is four-wheel drive, a headlamp, a propeller, an axe and a ski pole.
A heater is a plus, because a heater is sometimes needed in these freezing temperatures.
Oh, and you need to have a good snowmobile to survive in the human air, because there are plenty of snow jobs around here.

In summer, the 24-hour light disturbs sleep, as do mosquitoes – those lovely, whining friends of ours.
Summer and autumn in the North-East are spent hunting: fishing, berry picking, mushroom picking, hunting.
Of course, you have to pick everything yourself, otherwise your neighbour would probably hear from somewhere that ‘there he was again in the freezer buying blueberries for his morning porridge’.

May is the month that Northeasterners prefer: the month of rest.
No more skiing, no more frantic shopping, no more tourists crowding the markets.
No need to plant anything yet.
A moment of respite, then, before the madness starts again.

There is no need to help a North-Easterner, let alone cook for him.
So it goes without saying that the North-East is not for wimps.

Does it sound too scary or a challenge you would like to take up?
