The nature of the Northeast has inspired artists for decades. Kuusamo is known for photographer Hannu Hautala, Posio has one of Finland’s most beloved design houses created by Anu Pentik, and Taivalkoski has put Finland on the map through the production of Kalle Päätalo. These pioneers have a strong tradition in the creative industries, offering many exciting job opportunities.
Creativity from nature
Kuusamo, voted the most beautiful municipality in Finland, is an excellent place to study photography. Kuusamo University’s photography department offers a year-long course of study and various short courses. Pentik’s ceramics factory, logistics centre, office and factory outlet in Posio offer career opportunities ranging from design and planning to production and sales. Posio also has a high school with a focus on ceramics and the Arctic Ceramics Centre, which offers residencies for artists. In Taivalkoski you can follow in the footsteps of Kalle Päätalo and take out your pen and paper. Each year, the Päätalo Institute organises a number of one- or more-weekend-long writers’ training courses.
